As the year ends I decided to bring back some of what I consider were the best things of 2008 to me.  Also and as promised before this is the english version of an earlier post I made.

Recently I discovered the wonder of PortableApps (portable applications). It is a set of open source software that is completely portable and can be used directly from a USB Pen Drive.

Right now I’m trying some of them but I must highlight one of my favorite applications: Firefox Portable.

I am a huge fan of Firefox and since I discovered it that is my main browser.

The problem is that throughout the day I use several computers (two or three depending on the day) which causes me some problems, mainly in the navigation history. Another problem is that usually I need to configure my Add-ons in different computers over and over.

The big advantage of portable applications, and in particular of Portable Firefox, is that all the settings and add-ons are in the Pen Drive. Also the navigation history is recorded in our Pen Drive which in terms of privacy is very good. We take “our” Firefox to everywhere and can use it on any computer, as long that it has USB.

It’s just equal to the Firefox installed on our computer, but it is portable.

In my opinion this is one of the best advantages of Firefox until now and that definitely made me abandon the use of any other browser (unless that for professional reasons I have to use another).

And after trying out Ubuntu in a USB Pen Drive now I am more portable …

In one of my latest posts I announced that I was going to undertake some changes in the blog.

The most important change is the language. From now on I’ll start posting in English. So this post is kinda of a Hello World once again (although I’ve skipped the first Hello World post when i started using WordPress).

I decided not to start a new blog and instead change my current one. The problem is that the blog is in Portuguese (my native language). So in order to completely make the transition it will take some work. Some task are already completed but there’s still some work to be done (as it can be seen).

Most of the Tags and Categories haven’t yet been changed and it will take some time before I do that.

The content will also have some changes. I´ll focus more on my experience and be a little more personal. It will be “my geek experience”.

The next few days I’ll keep on working in the changes and I’ll try to make some new posts. Of course that my favorite posts from the past will be translated because most of them gaved me lots of joy to make. And I also want to share those with you (now in a new language).

O blog volta à actividade no início de 2009.

Como já disse tomei algumas decisões em relação ao blog.

Desde que comecei a escrever este blog, em Maio de 2007 ainda nos blogs do Sapo, que tinha uma série de objectivos em mente.

Com o tempo alguns foram atingidos, outros eliminados e mais alguns foram acrescentados à lista.

O ter passado a ter o blog alojado em plataforma Wordpress foi claramente uma aposta ganha (apesar de por vezes ter saudades da facilidade que eram os blogs do Sapo).

Ter entrado para o agregador Prt.Sc foi mais uma aposta ganha. Apesar de não ter trazido tanto tráfego como eu esperava os números foram muito significativos (e ainda são) e notou-se claramente que o blog passou a ter mais exposição.

Mas ainda não estou satisfeito. É algo que tem muito a ver com a minha maneira de ser.

Sempre assumi este blog como algo experimental, em constante mutação. Algo em versão Beta (muito popular na web de hoje em dia) que ainda está sujeito a alterações e melhorias.

Com estas ideias em mente tomei uma decisão que já andava a fermentar na minha mente há uns tempos.

Vou começar a escrever em Inglês.

Não é que tenha algo contra a lí­ngua portuguesa. Antes pelo contrário. Adoro-a e com o tempo aprendi ainda mais a gostar dela.

Mas um blog dedicado a uma temática tão específica (algo tipo jogos e realidades virtuais apesar de não ser bem isso e ser mais algo como a minha experiência geek mas pouco geek) como o meu não tem muita audiência quando escrito em português. É um nicho de interesse demasiado pequeno e pouco populado.

Nos últimos dias tenho andado a preparar as coisas para fazer esta transição. De início enquanto ainda estou um pouco enferrujado as coisas não devem sair com muita fluência, ou pelo menos com a fluência a que já me tinha habituado.

Não vou retirar os posts mais antigos em Português e por isso durante alguns tempos este blog será bilingue. Vou também aproveitar alguns dos artigos que me deram muito gozo escrever e fazer versões em inglês dos mesmos.

Será um novo capítulo desta minha experiência que é ter um blog. Espero que os resultados sejam satisfatórios face às minha expectativas.
